Andy's Digital Renaissance Project

Andy's Summer Playhouse // 2020

Project Overview
When the 2020 lockdown hit, Andy's Summer Playhouse had the same problem a lot of arts programs did. Their whole thing is kids and teens in a room together, making theater, film, animation, and art alongside professional artist mentors. Overnight, the room was gone. They brought me in to build the thing that would put it back: a custom collaboration platform where young artists and adult artist-leads could find each other, plan their days, and make work together from home.
My Contributions
I ran it as creative director, product and UX designer, and project manager, with one engineer building alongside me. I designed the dashboard, the project spaces, the schedules, and the collaboration hub, and built a public-facing showcase site for the work the kids made, in collaboration with a teen illustrator from the playhouse.

One place to start the day
Dashboard and daily overview
Every young artist and mentor lands on a dashboard built to answer one question fast: what am I doing today? From here they can request a new project, browse what's active, see what's coming, and jump straight into their schedule. Announcements and a trending row keep the whole program feeling alive and connected, even when everyone is in a different living room.
Where the making happens
Project spaces, schedules, and collaboration

Projects are the heart of the program, so I made them easy to browse and join, sorted into three kinds of creative space called Exchange, Stage, and Bonfire. Once a young artist joins, the project page turns into a shared workspace. A timeline lays out sessions and assignments, links drop everyone straight into Zoom, Slack, and Dropbox, and you can always see who is leading and who else is in the room. Participants and artist-leads also get a clear read on their day and their week, in a day or card view they can filter by project type.
A home for the work
Public website for the final work

Alongside the platform, I built a public-facing site for the program, and this one was pure joy. I teamed up with a teen illustrator from the playhouse to make something wonderfully weird: part playful showcase of everything the kids created, part kid-first introduction to the program itself. Handing the art direction to a young artist felt like the most Andy's way to do it, and it is still one of my favorite corners of this whole project.
